Web Analytics at Nokia (You Can Join Them!)
Ilkka Manninen is an IT product manager responsible for the web analytics tool at Nokia. His team of five people offer corporate-wide services and work in close cooperation with other corporate units.
Nokia is a big corporation. How many FTEs work as web analysts?
Ilkka: “Nokia operates in rather decentralized mode when it comes to web analytics, which means business units are independently responsible for their analytics and this makes it difficult to say the exact number. I’d estimate it in the tens worldwide; in Finland we’re five.”
Tell us what it’s like to work with web analytics at Nokia.
Ilkka: “One word describes it aptly: challenging. As a large corporation, we have a lot of websites and our presence on the Internet is growing constantly. We have a lot of interesting projects running and coming up, just the sheer amount of activities make it challenging. Also, the decentralized structure brings about its own challenges. Mastering the operational complexity is no trivial task. Luckily our team consists of talented and capable people. There’s still too much reporting and not enough analytics, and we aim to raise the bar and educate our stakeholders about the benefits of analytics, which we hope will ultimately lead to real business (customer) intelligence. As you probably know, Nokia is re-organizing its operations at the beginning of 2008. Nokia aims to become an Internet company and this creates even more demand for web analytics. The near future is interesting time for us and certainly promises no less challenges than we’ve had so far.”
What is your biggest challenge during the year to come?
Ilkka: “Definitely the new Internet services Nokia has launched, e.g. ovi.nokia.com, and the ones Nokia is going to launch. These services demand a lot from our team in Finland.”
I hear you’re recruiting a new web analyst. Can you tell us more about the position?
Ilkka: “Gladly. The position is located in Finland at Nokia’s headquarter, together with the rest of the team. As I mentioned before, there’s more demand for the services we offer, so we would like two additional pairs of hands (brains) to help us. Specifically, we’re interested in senior analysts, somebody with experience in the field. Someone who has experience in dealing with multiple stakeholders, has experience in managing vendors, is interested in developing work methods in this field and in general has the ability and interest to provide advice/coaching and even leadership would be an ideal candidate. We have established ways of working, clear roles and the teammates who will help the newcomers get accustomed to the “habits of the house”. I am confident even experienced people would learn a lot of new things at Nokia. We bring added value to our customers by guiding them through the web analytics journey, from objectives setting, to implementation, to analysis, and ultimately business intelligence. If you think you’re a master of that process, or even a part of it, we’d certainly like to hear from you!”
