Interview with Hiten Shah, Founder and CEO of CrazyEgg

May 25th, 2007 by Lars

How did you come up with the idea to create Crazy Egg?

We came up with the idea to create Crazy Egg because we had been working with web analytics for a while and felt that there was a need for an easy to understand solution that was visually appealing. This was mainly because we found ourselves trying to explain to clients why we wanted to make changes to their websites, and felt that analyzing and using data was not the most efficient way to do that. Also, we had a feeling that easy to understand visual representations of data could be valuable to many different types of people.

Who did you make Crazy Egg for? Someone wanting heat maps and visual overlays but who can’t afford a complete web analytics package? Or?

Crazy Egg is designed to be a complement to any analytics package. It tracks the exact location of a click on a page, which is something that most analytics packages do not do today. The idea is that if we can track and visually display this information, people will be able to get a deeper understanding of what’s going on and make changes accordingly. Crazy Egg can be used by anyone looking to improve the effectiveness of their website.

When is your next release? Any new functionality in the works that you can tell us about?

We are working on several new features, one of them is called “Confetti”, it will be out very soon. It is another visual representation for a webpage that represents where people came from and what they clicked on. I think this will be one of the more useful visualizations we have created to date.
