Eric T. Peterson Talks About Web Analytics Demystified, Inc.

May 14th, 2007 by Lars

Eric recently annouced that he has left Visual Sciences to run his own company called Web Analytics Demystified, Inc. Many of you probably recognize the name from Eric’s book and website. I wanted to congratulate Eric on the move and wish him good luck as well as ask him a few questions about the decision.

What was the number one reason that made you take the step at this particular time?

I have been in the web analytics space, as you know, for a long time. I have always known I would start my own company but was waiting for the market to be ready for the kind of company I wanted to form. Now, thousands of around the world companies are buying great technology and investing in people to manage the applications, the two pre-requisites for benefiting from the work that I do.

What would it take for a vendor to lure you back?

Nothing, since it won’t happen at this time. I’m very confident in my ability to build a great company based on my experience and thought leadership in the sector. The initial response to my news has been very good and several exciting opportunities are already in the works — the most exciting of which is more trips to Europe. Two are already planned, including one that will almost certainly allow me to come to STOCKHOLM in September!

I’ve worked for some great people on some great teams. Now it’s my turn to be a great leader and build great teams of my own.

Do you think we’ll see a substantial amount of talent leave their employers to set up business during the remainder of this year?

That’s hard to know, but certainly that seems to be the trend. Hossam, Jacques, Avinash, me, and at least a half-a-dozen other folks I know of have taken the plunge. But none of us have really proven our ability to be
successful yet. Only time will tell …
