Business Intelligence from Sweden

May 11th, 2007 by Lars Johansson

Why is it that two of the most interesting companies were founded in Sweden?

I don’t know, but have a look at their products.

QlikView from QlikTech
Spotfire DXP from Spotfire.

And why not find a wine for the weekend using the QlikView Wine Selector?

I think Sweden has an old tradition in a couple of areas that contribute to this.
First Statistics. We are used to collect and work with data. This tradition goes back to the 16th century when the king wanted control over people and (other) assets. We had a mining industry long before the industrial revolution and this lead to a nead for control over the forest industry which was an important input. Remember this was befor gunpowder and other explosives! Look what happened in countries without this control. Echologic disasters when the need for wood raised.
Jumping to the 20th century we have had some of the greatest statisticians in the world inventing a lot of models used throughout the world.
This leads to the second factor which is computer science, early adopted in Sweden.
Computers have been very usefull in statistics and visualisation, which we have a good feeling for.
What we have been not so good in is the comercial side of this. And as seen, we take our time…
